UPDATE: Specialists on the NYSE are now called a “Designated Market Maker’s (DMMs)”. Nothing else has changed as far as their roles and obligations and the markets are still dominated by DMM’s activity – buying and selling for their own accounts and maintaining fair and orderly markets for their assigned securities.
